How to prepare and sell your boat successfully

25.08.2017

You've paid a deposit for a new boat, but you couldn't get rid of the old one? That problem makes you extremely nervous, especially because you know that money you've received from the sold, the used boat could be enough to cover your down payment and it would also significantly reduce your loan rates. Of course, that would happen only in case the boat is sold at the price you've firstly set and that's quite an adventure.

But, what to do and how to act when local advertising of your boat turns out to be a real donkeywork? Ask yourselves whether you have approached the boat sales in the right way? Have you chosen a good sales strategy or have you prepared yourself or your boat good enough for that demanding task?

Let's be realistic, to sell a used boat can turn into a real business adventure, complete loss of time and a nervous breakdown. You should count on that. How to sell your boat quickly and successfully and in the same time how to make some money and not lose it?

We're offering you five golden rules to successfully sell your used boat

  1. Price – It's the most important thing to know that all the stuff has its own price and its own buyer. You just have to know how to specify it properly. Many people have difficulties while accepting the market reality about the value of the selling boat. And it's all about supply and demand on the market of used vessels. Firstly, it's important to make up your mind for the lowest possible price, for the one you are not willing to sell your boat, even though on the market like this one it is better to take the money than wait for the perfect customer forever, especially in case you overprice the value of your boat. How to estimate the value? Go and consult someone who knows how to do that and to someone who you can trust to. Also, you should check the price of the vessel of the same brand and model. Your price in ads should be a little bit higher than the one you want and the bargainig is not an only normal thing to happen, but it's also desireable.

  1. Well informed – The more reliable information about your vessel you have, the possibility to better sell it is higher. Most customers are well informed about the boat they are interested in and want to buy it. Customers know the most vulnerable places and things that break down. Due to that, it is good to know both; the answer on any important question and the way you solved the problem. You can't allow yourself being poorly informed about your vessel because it can backfire to you and your customer may have the feeling of wanting to set him/her up with a vessel in poor condition. While speaking with customers you should answer their questions sincerely, especially if they ask you about the parts of a vessel that require extra care or that need to be replaced oftenly. That works especially for vessels that are known to have some sort of a fault; such as bad mechanism or electronics that can often cause problems. Point out things that you have replaced recently and the price of the cost, so that customer knows what part is new and doesn't need to be replaced.
  2. It's all about the appearance – As online shop has become irreplaceable when it comes to this job, you're gonna need the best possible photos that will attract buyer's attention. You'll need photos that will ''catch'' the eye of a buyer. Don't make classical mistakes by posting old pictures of your vessel on the Internet. Let your boat look good in the picture, but let it look even better in the reality. You don't want the buyer to give up buying your boat just because its appearance is poor. Clean up your boat and keep it that way any time buyer comes to see the boat. Polish all the wooden parts and make it shine.

  1. Offer an expert review - The buyer will definitely want to try the boat. If you are able, offer a professional expert who is neutral and who will give his/hers professional opinion. This will be a good way for the customer to prove that you are not hiding anything and that he/she is not buying a ''pig in a poke".
  1. Brokerage - In the end, the easiest way is to contact a broker who sells used (or new) vessels and offer him your boat for sale. If you are in hurry, that's the optimum way. They (brokerage agency) will offer you the price and make quick payouts, but normally it would be lower than the one you can get on the market, or through an ad or at a used boat fair. But what your intermediaries will compensate for, are your time and nerves. And we'll agree that these things sometimes have no price, right?

With a bit of luck and patience, you will surely find the right customer. And if you need an advice on selling a used yacht and expert sales assistance, Euronautic staff are at your disposal.
