Adriatic Sea – 5 reasons to sail along the Croatian coast

    23.01.2020

Many of you have probably heard about Croatia as an ideal sailing destination. Clear waters, turquoise seas, stunningly beautiful sunsets, a light breeze through your hair during sailing vacation. Sounds familiar?

But, sometimes all these descriptions may, from time to time, seem as nothing more than a mere platitude and can divert us from believing in Croatia as the almost heavenly destination. What if we reassure you by telling you that Croatia is one truly unique destination, especially if you see and explore her through a sailing vacation. Sailing vacation blends together all land and sea experiences in one and as such allows you to truly meet Croatia, from her most claimed places to places that you will discover by yourselves. So, if you continue reading this blog, we might give you all the trustworthy reasons that will make you come to Croatia and catch the wind in your sails towards any direction you want because you will definitely not miss by choosing any destination.

    1.     Croatian Indented Coast

Croatian coast is considered the most indented coast in the Mediterranean, including about 1244 islands among which only about 50 of them are inhabited. Depending on a destination you direct your sails to, there is a cove, bay, island or islet that will perfectly suit your needs. If you are on a sailing vacation with your friends and have a larger crew, maybe you will prefer more crowded bays, coves such as Sakarun, where you can also socialise with other people. If you are on vacation with your family and prefer more privacy, there are many secluded, romantic getaways that perhaps you’ll discover on your own. Most of these places are great anchoring spots. It is a pure pleasure to sail among these numerous island passages collecting memories, nature scenes and improving your sailing skills.

    2.     Favourable Mediterranean Climate

Croatia has a Mediterranean climate characterised by mild winters and hot summers. Weather and temperatures in Croatia mostly depend on a period you choose for a sailing vacation. The sailing season starts in April and May and lasts until the end of October. In April and May, temperatures usually don’t go above 24°C; weather is dry and sunny, but sometimes can surprise with occasional showers. The peak of the sailing season is in July and August when the temperature can go up to 38°C.  In June, September and October weather is enjoyable, and there is definitely less crowd at sea, so you will be able to enjoy your privacy and peace. Bear in mind winds and pay attention to the weather forecast, because some winds are breezes, others are great for sailing and some can be challenging.

    3.     Croatian Preserved Nature

With long coastlines, extremely clean waters, environment and skies, eight national parks, eleven nature parks, we can easily say that Croatia is one of the best-preserved parts of Europe. Croatian coast is an attractive one, especially islands. Many islands are distant from coast and therefore remained untouched by people, meaning there are no facilities, restaurants, bars, roads - only authentic nature. When on a sailing vacation in Croatia, it would be nice if you’d manage to explore at least two national parks: the Kornati, known as the largest instalment of islands on the Adriatic and Mljet, known for its large green area. There are two Nature parks worth of visiting too: Telašica bay on Dugi Otok island and Lastovo island. Telaščica is known as the safest sailing port on the Adriatic and Lastovo is known for its clear and crystal night’s sky. As you can see, sailing along Adriatic is magical and a never-seen-before experience you will not want to miss.

    4.     Mediterranean delicacies & wines

One thing you surely mustn’t miss on your sailing vacation is tasting local Mediterranean delicacies and wine. Each island and place have their own cuisine and believe us, each of them will delight your taste buds. Try sheep cheese and lamb on Pag island, Viška pogača or lobster in Komiža,  prosciutto in Istria or Dalmatian villages.  Black risotto, octopus salad, tuna specialities are simply must-try Croatian food, especially while sailing. A lot of sunny days, good weather conditions, warm temperatures combined with Dalmatian tradition have resulted in creating extraordinary red and white wines. Can you imagine yourselves sailing in a sunset, with a glass of Pošip, Plavac, Malvazija, etc.? Well, it’s one more reason to sail Croatian coast.

    5.     Old town centres

Croatia has a rich historical and cultural heritage that is definitely worth of visiting while on sailing vacation. There are plenty of things to visit and explore, as almost every stone, building or monument has some kind of a legend or historical fact behind it. Whether you decide to make a sailing stop by in bigger towns along Adriatic coast such as Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar or in more charming, little towns such as Pirovac, Vodice, Skradin, Primošten you will be genuinely delighted. Take a stroll among old, narrow streets, explore monuments, have a drink in centre towns and blend yourselves with a vivid history behind every corner.

All in all, sailing along the Croatian coast can be much more than just finding bays, enjoying sunsets and anchoring. You can use your sailing vacation to explore Croatian islands and coastline truly, taste typical and fresh seafood, know a bit of history and socialise with Croatian people. After all, the best way to find your reasons to set sail along the Croatian coast will be for you to come and see it yourself. The only thing you have to do now is to pick the right boat that will take you on this vacation. Contact us for any suggestion.
